In the 1960s, Honda focused on crafting stylish, lightweight motorcycles that offered rural riders a practical, economical alternative to larger bikes. Among these was the iconic S90 (Super 90), a distinctive bike with a chrome gas tank and stamped frame, powered by an 89.6 cc SOHC 2-valve 4-stroke air-cooled engine, reaching a top speed of 64 mph.
Now, 60 years later, the Honda Super 90 is reimagined with a 60th Anniversary model! While much has changed, the essence remains true to the 1960s design, blending classic aesthetics with modern innovation. The new S90 is slightly larger, sleeker, and more aerodynamic. Signature chrome accents are still present, tracing the gas tank and adding stylish highlights throughout the bike.
The body construction embodies the same philosophy: this model now features a stamped aluminum inner frame paired with a carbon fiber outer shell, enhancing strength and stability while keeping weight low.
In place of the original gas engine, the 21st-century S90 is all-electric, staying eco-friendly without sacrificing performance. It features dual electric hub motors, one on each wheel, for all-wheel drive. Each motor generates 50 kW, delivering a combined 100 hp at the wheels. Stopping power comes from dual electromagnetic braking hubs, which are durable, low-maintenance, and hose-free for a streamlined design.
A powerful 14 kWh air-cooled Lithium Sulfide (Li2S) battery powers the hub motors, storing four times the energy of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Positioned low on the frame, the battery improves energy efficiency and traction by lowering the center of gravity.
As a fully electric motorcycle, the new S90 integrates advanced safety features such as ABS, traction control, stability control, launch control, and a regenerative braking system that recovers up to 60% of braking energy. Sensors constantly monitor the bike’s status, displaying real-time information on an OLED touchscreen connected to the onboard computer.
This electric design requires significantly fewer parts—over half of what a traditional gas-powered bike needs—making production faster and more cost-effective. The 60th Anniversary Honda Super 90 proudly bridges classic Honda craftsmanship with the future of eco-friendly motorcycling.
