Known primarily for weapon manufacturing, including the iconic Kalashnikov rifle, Izh was also the USSR’s foremost motorcycle manufacturer, producing more bikes than IMZ-Ural before the Soviet Union’s collapse. In fact, with over 11 million motorcycles made since 1927, Izh was once the world’s second-largest producer of motorcycles, trailing only Japan. Despite its historic impact, this brand remains largely unknown in the West.
Motorcycle production began at Izh in 1927, with engineer P.V. Mozharov’s Izh-1—a 1200cc V-twin with a transverse engine, three-speed gearbox, and innovative stamped steel frame with an integrated muffler.
This is my take on the redesign of a 1929 Izh–1
Design
This redesigned Izh-1 embodies sleek, aerodynamic lines balanced by a powerful stance. Utilizing modern materials and lighter components, it’s nearly half the weight of its 1929 predecessor. The bold, solid front flows seamlessly into a lighter rear, combining agility with strength. This bike is designed not merely for transportation, but to provide a fully immersive connection to the world, both digitally and emotionally—a true sport cruiser for a new era.
Power
At its core is a V-twin 849cc engine delivering 140 horsepower, with 50% of the engine built from heat-resistant, reinforced plastic. Integrated wiring and circuitry reduce weight and enhance durability, minimizing corrosion risks and improving diagnostic accuracy. The engine also features an automatic fuel-regulating system for optimal fuel efficiency. A brushless 60kW electric motor is embedded in the rear wheel and powered by a Lithium Sulfide (Li2S) battery, providing four times the energy storage of lithium-ion batteries. This hybrid setup yields around 80 mpg. The bike includes a six-speed transmission with an optional automatic mode, and the clutch, brakes, and throttle are electronically controlled for precise performance.
Safety
The Izh Concept prioritizes safety with dual airbags designed to stabilize the bike in a frontal collision. The front airbag absorbs impact while keeping the rear tire grounded to prevent the rider from being thrown forward. A second airbag captures the rider’s shoulders to limit forward motion. The skeleton fork design acts as a crumple zone, locking forward upon impact to absorb force safely.
Additional safety technology includes a radar-based proximity system and front-facing camera, automatically maintaining a safe distance from vehicles. It can detect objects as small as a bunny and includes night vision. A 3D LCD screen displays potential hazards, with vibrating handlebars alerting the rider to threats. Side sensors monitor blind spots, with indicators on the mirrors. Other safety features include advanced traction control, adaptive headlights that follow turns, a stabilizer to prevent wobble, and enhanced ABS. Functional front intakes cool the radiator and provide aerodynamic stability at high speeds, while daytime running lights enhance visibility.
Connectivity
Designed for a connected lifestyle, the Izh Concept’s onboard computer dynamically adjusts systems for safety and comfort. A 3D touchscreen LCD provides diagnostics, maintenance alerts, and warnings, with three selectable modes: sport, comfort, and manual.
One standout feature is augmented reality (AR) integration, with an HD front camera overlaying GPS navigation and highlighting points of interest. This AR system enhances safety by outlining potential hazards in real time.
The bike also seamlessly connects to mobile devices, allowing remote control via the main display. Compatible with major operating systems, riders can manage calls using a control scroll wheel on the handlebar, with additional functions accessible when stationary. Standard connectivity features include GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, and 5G.
The Izh Concept marks a transformative step forward, combining historic craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology for a riding experience that defines the future of motorcycling.
